A Christmas Movie Crisis

Eric Murphy on November 7th, 2006

I love the Christmas season. It truly is “the most wonderful time of the year”. The beautiful decorations that neighbors dress their houses with, the smell of fresh-baked cookies, visiting with family and friends, the sounds of a classic Christmas song, and our favorite Christmas movies are all favorites this for me this time of year. But in recent years there seems to be a certain “magic” missing from the movies. Christmas movies of times past seem to have some key ingredients that todays movies sincerely lack. But I cant quite figure out what’s missing. Is it creativity, heart, love, pain, imagination, all of the above? Of course, if I knew, then I wouldn’t be writing this rant. Instead, I would be making a movie that would once again capture all of our hearts and minds and become an instant classic.

Well, until the next great Christmas classic appears, I have a couple of suggestion:

  1. By way of public nomination, pick and handful of favorite classics, digitally remastered, and put them on the big screen.
  2. From Thanksgiving until Christmas, devote one (1) cable/satellite station to playing 24 hour CLASSIC Christmas specials ( Crappy movies/specials, need not apply).

One thing to note: It does not necessarily have to be old to be a classic. It just has to be good (loved by many).
I believe this is a good and fair proposal, that will hopefully challenge and inspire writers and directors to really think about making good Christmas movies today and not succumb to the pressures of Hollywood to make movies just so some has-been washed-up actors can make a quick Christmas buck. Nevertheless, I will not let the lack of good Christmas movies ruin my good cheer. I am certain, neither will you.
