Apology for Slavery follow up

Eric Murphy on February 20th, 2007

Since writing about the Apology for Slavery in Virginia  we have learned that Hargrove’s grandfather owned slaves. I have also been noticing the way people are reacting to this issue here in Richmond. Its made me think - maybe we haven’t come as far as we thought on racial reconciliation. Maybe we do need to air out some dirty laundry. Maybe The week after this story first appeared, a story of a man who’s father was killed in Alabama for marrying a white woman told reporters about his own struggles.

We need more than an apology for slavery. We need an apology for the hate that fuels the enslavement of entire races, and causes a people to think their superior to another race because of the color of their skin.  And maybe a nationwide public apology isnt such a bad idea. Northern states and western states may not need to apologize for slavery but what about the way we have treated and continue to treat Native Americans? Hatred is disgusting in any form and if we have the opportunity to right some wrongs on this issue, than we should do so. And an apology would be a good start.

  1. More important than an apology for racism is an actual change of attitude, without which an apology means nothing.

  2. I can only hope that you people will let it be known
That you are speaking for your self and not for the rest of us. I do not apologize for slavery and NEVER WILL.

  3. The white people are the minority in this country now. I wasn’t born when slavery was around and will never apoligize for it. Are we still mad at Japan over Pearl Harbor? No we meet with them there. Its time to just get over it and stop using it as a meal ticket or free ride.

  4. I appreciate the comments, but please consider the sensitive nature of this subject and respond with careful consideration of the language you use. If you do not feel an apology is necessary then I certainly respect your opinions. And BTW, white Americans are NOT the MINORITY in this country, they ARE the majority. This is a FACT.

I do see what Stephanie is saying. More important is a change of attitude in this country. The more accepting we are of each other. All being said, we should probably be focused on how we can all forward together.

  5. Well, as Dave Chapelle said, “If you have hate in your heart, let it out.”

  6. Human beings need to evolve. People forget that we’re just animals,… literally. Animals prey on what they perceive as vulnerable. Unfortunately, it’s our nature as a species. Aside from slavery there is all sorts of unconscienceable behaviors of which we are capable. What about black-on-black crime? Who is to apologize for this?

We’re animals, and we as a species need to get over it and learn to evolve into a more productive and responsible one.
